Boring workout? Try enhancing it with these tips!
We all know the feeling. Alarm bell rings at 6am for our morning jog. It is cold outside and the bed covers are just right. Bugger it! I’ll sleep for 10 more minutes…
However, getting out of bed or going to the gym might be a little bit easier if our workout was a little bit more interesting. And not only that, changing your workout by adding a few little tips and tricks can make your progress more rapid and complete.
Here are 8 of my favorites:
1. Do it with a friend
Training with a friend can make a boring job much more interesting. You would be surprised at all the things that come out on a long jog. Funny stories, interesting gossip and sometimes even a running challenge!
2. Change your reps
I don’t mean alter the number of reps you do for each set, I mean change the way you do each rep. For example, I quite often do a whole gym session where every decline motion I make as long as possible. Sometimes I make the decline of my chin ups go for one minute or more and then once I reach the bottom I jump up to the top and do it again. It is an excellent way to mix things up.
3. Change the location
Same gym, same park, same street block… boring. Change the place you workout as often as you can. The other day my friend told me he got on a random bus near his house and rode it for ten minutes and then ran home just for something different. I thought it was a great idea! Different is good.
4. Join a random class
If you are a member of the gym rock up at a random time and head into one of the free classes that the gym runs. There are so many of them and they are usually full of gorgeous looking people for you to workout with (look at!).
5. Team sports
I recently got back into soccer and started an indoor team with my little brother and my cousin. It is hard, fast and very intense but it is social and enjoyable. We talk about it on IM during the week at work and everyone is always excited come game time.
Team sports are particularly good for weight loss and fitness because you don’t want to let your team down by not rocking up. That cuts out any chance that you might be too tired or lazy to workout.
6. Relax!
If you don’t want to workout perhaps you don’t need to. Sometimes a feeling or tiredness can be an indication that you are overdoing it. Listening to your body is important but you need to learn to distinguish between lazy thoughts and intelligent thoughts.
7. Set a stupidly unrealistic goal and achieve it
Sometimes it is fun to make a goal that you feel is out of your reach and pump away until you get to it. For example, you might want to challenge your shoulders and so you should pick a light weight and not leave the gym room until you have done 100 repetitions. Mixing up your weights routine like this is an excellent way to shock your muscles into growth.
8. Attend a sporting event
Sometimes if you have lost motivation it is a good idea to go and see something that inspires you. I used to go and hire a couple of old kung fu movies and watch them until my love for the art came back and I could look past all the blood, sweat and tears.
Go to a football match, bodybuilding contest, basketball game… anything that displays amazing skill that willl get you going again. It might be a better idea to go and see someone else enjoying their sport then trying to struggle through your own.
